Originally intended to be used for listening to church services by genteel ladies who were hard of hearing. Headphones would have ruffled their elaborate hairdos. There would be a PA system in churches presumably with jack sockets fitted into the posh people's pews. There is a rotary volume knob set into the bottom of the wand. Although these were made to be earpieces, being of moving iron diaphragm construction, they work perfectly well as microphones also. They could therefore be used by telephonists on our period telephone switchboards.
